Cultural reshaping (artificial deformation or modification) of the neurocranial vault provides an artificially increased range of morphological variability within which the relationship between the growing neurocranium and face can be investigated. We analyze crania which have been fronto-occipitally compressed to ascertain possible morphological effects on the mandible. We collected measures of mandibular breadth, length, and height from 82 modified (N = 48) and unmodified (N = 34) crania from a Peruvian Ancon series. Angle classification was also scored in order to investigate whether or not occlusal relationships were affected by neurocranial reshaping. Only intercondylar distance (posterior mandibular breadth) exhibited significant differences between unmodified and modified groups, though this difference was relatively small compared with vault deformation. The modified crania had a higher frequency of normal occlusion (Class I) than the unmodified crania. Increased intercondylar breadth in modified skulls is due to a cascade of effects which begin with a direct effect of the fronto-occipital deforming device on neurocranial shape (increased neurocranial width). The increase in mandibular breadth may be a compensatory response to increased cranial base breadth and maintains articulation between the cranial base and mandible. The increased posterior breadth, coupled with a slight decrease in mandibular depth, may contribute to the change in occlusal relationships suggested for this sample.  相似文献

Two novel bone diseases from the archosaur record were noted during the course of a survey of archosaur oral pathology. These abnormalities, pertaining to abnormal suturing of the crocodilian palate and ventral mandibular muscle scarring in tyrannosaurs, are classified within this paper according to a new classification system for ancient bone pathology. The late Pleistocene was a time of environmental change, culminating in an extinction event. Few fossil localities record a temporal series of carnivore fossil populations from this interesting interval as well as Rancho La Brea (RLB). We analysed mandibles of Smilodon fatalis from RLB using 2‐D geometric morphometrics to examine whether, and how, mandibular shape changes through time. Smilodon fatalis shows mandibular evolution with oscillations between a small, ancestral‐type morph in pits 77 (≈37 Kybp) and 2051 (≈26 Kybp), a larger, more derived morph in pits 91 (≈28 Kybp) and 61‐67 (≈13.6 Kybp), and an intermediate morph from pit 13 (≈17.7 Kybp). These oscillations end in pit 61‐67, with greatest body size, and are estimated to have its widest gape and lowest bite force. Additionally, variation is lowest in pit 61‐67, which was deposited concurrent with the Bølling–Allerød warming event, which may have important implications for the timing or conditions during the extinction event. Contra to a temporal Bergmann's rule, such rapid warming events appear to be correlated with larger, derived, morphologies whereas static, cooler, climates correlate with gracile, ancestral morphologies.  相似文献

The genera Raabena and Pararaabena (Ciliophora, Entodiniomorphida, Blepharocorythidae) were monospecific, and their type species are Raabena bella Wolska, 1967 and Pararaabena dentata Wolska, 1968. They have been found in Asian elephants and closely resemble each other: ovoid and laterally compressed body; non-retractable adoral ciliary zone; funnel-shaped vestibulum; three non-retractable somatic ciliary arches. Furthermore, the positional relationship between the vestibular ciliary zone and the anterior dorsal ciliary zone identifies Raabena and Pararaabena: these two ciliary zones are connected in Raabena while they are separated in Pararaabena. While investigating entodiniomorphid ciliates of Asian elephants, the author often encountered ciliates similar to Raabena bella but with a sinuous body or with a small body and ciliates similar to Pararaabena dentata but with a slender body or with no or two caudal lobes. In this study, their general morphology and infraciliature were compared to R. bella and P. dentata to know whether they are new species or morphological variations in a species. As a result, the present study redescribed R. bella and P. dentata, and described R. sinuosa n. sp., R. bellafilia n. sp., P. gracilis n. sp., and morphotypes of P. dentata.  相似文献

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by bone mineral density reduction, weakening the bone structure. Its diagnosis is performed using ionizing radiation, increasing health risk. Optical techniques are safer, due to non‐ionizing radiation use, but limited to the analyses of bone tissue. This limitation may be circumvented in the oral cavity. In this work we explored the use of laser speckle imaging (LSI) to differentiate the sound and osteoporotic maxilla and mandible bones in an in vitro model. Osteoporosis lesions were simulated with acid attack. The samples were evaluated by optical profilometry and LSI, using a custom software. Two image parameters were evaluated, speckle contrast ration and patches ratio. With the speckle contrast ratio, it was possible to differentiate sound from osteoporotic tissue. From speckle patches ratio it was observed a negative correlation with the roughness parameter. LSI is a promissory technique for assessment of osteoporosis lesions on alveolar bone.  相似文献

A modification of the graphical Costello method is proposed for the analysis of stomach contents data. The new method allows prey importance, feeding strategy and the interand intra-individual components of niche width to be explored using graphical presentation. The analysis is based on a two-dimensional representation of prey-specific abundance and frequency of occurrence of the different prey types in the diet. The paper describes the new method and the parameters therein, and also present some examples of the utilization of the method. The method may be particularly well-suited for the examination of predictions made from optimal foraging, competition and niche theories.  相似文献

Habitat specialists are considered to be more sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance than habitat generalists. However, a number of studies have shown that habitat specialists can be tolerant to or even benefit from environmental degradation, suggesting that the effect of disturbance on distributions and abundances of habitat generalists and specialists can be unpredictable. In this study, we assessed the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the degree of specialization of stream macroinvertebrates in boreal streams. We first measured the niche width for each macroinvertebrate species using the Outlying Mean Index (OMI) analysis and then, using independent data sets of near-pristine and anthropogenically altered streams, we examined the effects of human disturbances on stream macroinvertebrates with different tolerances to environmental conditions. As expected, human disturbance significantly decreased the level of the specialization in stream macroinvertebrate assemblages, and taxa with narrow environmental tolerances were more sensitive to disturbance than taxa with wide tolerances. Despite being more sensitive to disturbance, taxa with narrow environmental tolerances were locally more abundant than tolerant taxa in near-pristine streams, indicating their better performance in their optimal environments. However, many tolerant taxa decreased in their occurrence in disturbed streams, suggesting that habitat generalists also tend to negatively respond to disturbance. Species-rich assemblages harboured more taxa with narrow tolerances compared with species poor assemblages, suggesting a high conservation value of streams with diverse macroinvertebrate assemblages. Consistent with findings for many biological groups, our results indicate that macroinvertebrate species specialised in certain habitats are more sensitive to environmental degradation than habitat generalists. However, contrary to many previous studies, our results suggest that only a few species are likely to benefit from anthropogenic disturbance and, therefore, environmental degradation does not necessary result in macroinvertebrate assemblages composed of a few tolerant taxa.  相似文献

A reassessment of the early last glacial immature Neandertal mandibular corpus from Archi indicates a series of features in which it closely resembles other pre-adolescent Neandertal mandibles and contrasts with those of similarly aged recent humans. These are in the context of a re-aging of the specimen to ca. 3 years on the basis of deciduous dental eruption and attrition and permanent dental calcification. The Archi 1 mandible resembles other immature Neandertals in having a “retreating” symphyseal profile in the context of moderate development of mental trigone features. It is relatively robust in the development of lateral and basilar corpus features and some increased symphyseal and lateral corpus thickness. And it exhibits, along with other Middle Paleolithic immature mandibles, anteriorly wide dental arcades, probably due to large developing anterior permanent tooth crowns.  相似文献
